Two teenage girls have died following a single vehicle collision on the Monaro Highway earlier today, Sunday 9 October.

About 8.10am police and emergency services were called to a single vehicle collision in the northbound lanes of the Monaro Highway at Hume.  

A Toyota sedan had left the roadway, crashed through a row of temporary fencing and then collided with a tree.  

The teenage girls, aged 14 and 15, were found in the vehicle and they were declared deceased at the scene.  

The time of the collision is not known, however it is believed it occurred in the hours before emergency services were notified by a passer-by.  

Initial police investigations indicated other people may have been in the vehicle at the time of the collision. 

Subsequent enquiries identified two teens who may have been in the vehicle and were known to the girls. Police located them at residences a short time later. They have received medical attention and are currently assisting investigators from the Major Collision Team with their enquiries.

These two deaths bring the ACT road toll for 2022 to 14. ACT Policing urges all road users to slow down and drive to the conditions.
