Sydney man extradited a second time to face EPIC assault charges

A 35-year-old NSW man has been extradited for a second time to face serious assault charges following a February 2022 incident at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC).

Earlier this year police received a report regarding the alleged assault of a 64-year-old woman, who was employed at a venue inside EPIC. The woman sustained fractures to both her wrists requiring surgery, after a man allegedly assaulted her while causing a disturbance.

In early May the man was arrested in Sydney and bailed to attend the ACT Magistrates Court on 6 May 2022 to face charges of trespassing, fail to comply with an order under the Crimes Act and recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm – the latter charge carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years.

The man subsequently failed to attend scheduled court appearances in June and July and a warrant was issued by the court for his arrest. He was arrested in Sydney and extradited to the ACT on the 28th of July.

The man was again bailed to next appear in court on 7 October – which he failed to do. The Magistrate issued another warrant for his arrest at this time.

On Wednesday night, 12 October, NSW Police officers again arrested the man and he appeared in the Blacktown Local Court where ACT Policing detectives successfully applied for his extradition.

The man was returned to the ACT yesterday 13 October, and he is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court today 14 October.
