GIVIT donation of the week: Mobile phone
A local organisation that supports families in need is looking for a mobile phone to help an extremely deserving family. The single mother has a serious health issue which has stopped her permanently from driving. The family has overcome this hurdle by the children taking three different buses to school, never missing a day and staying deeply committed to their studies and development as a family. A tightknit group, supporting each other doing the daily chores and work around the home to help their mum manage on her own. Unfortunately, the mother’s mobile phone has recently stopped working and this is her only way of staying in contact with her children while travelling to and from school, connecting to doctors and receiving school communications. Any pre-loved mobile phones that can be donated to support this family’s day-to-day life will be greatly appreciated. Items can be dropped off, posted or picked up by the charity. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. Advance care planning
If you were too unwell to speak for yourself, who would speak for you? An Advance Care Plan helps ensure your values and preferences are respected by doctors and family when you can’t voice your own decisions. Learn the steps in making a plan, tips for having the conversation about your wishes and find out who can help get your plan in place through a free online seminar via Zoom on Monday 6 July 10.30am-12pm. Variety 2020 Tax Appeal
Variety – the Children’s Charity has experienced a 460% increase in demand for educational assistance from disadvantaged families due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for children in need of technology devices to continue their education. Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT CEO, David Sexton, said more than one in six children are struggling in households experiencing severe financial stress, which has a long-term effect on learning outcomes. You can help now by donating to the Variety 2020 Tax Appeal which goes directly towards providing a laptop package to a disadvantaged child as early as next week. Pedal Power social rides
Now that restrictions have lifted, Pedal Power’s social rides have restarted in time to take advantage of Canberra’s winter weather. Anyone can join a Pedal Power social ride with many different options to choose from: weekday or weekend rides, long rides, on-road, off-road, etc. Social rides will follow the latest COVID advice to keep everyone safe. COVID-19 and wellbeing study
The University of Sydney is conducting a research study about the impact of isolation and social distancing on mental health and wellbeing on people in Australia, particularly for those in rural and regional areas. If you are currently aged over 18 and socially isolating, you may be eligible to participate. The study involves answering an online survey taking 5-7 minutes. Textile recycling
Aussie households can now have their unwanted old clothes, shoes and textiles picked up from home – at a desired time convenient to them – to be recycled. The streamlined self-service digital textile collection service has been launched by parcel delivery service, CouriersPlease, and sustainable sock company, Manrags. To book a textile collection service, consumers ‘purchase’ their collection on the Manrags website, manrags.com.au, for $25, which allows for up to 10kg of unwanted textiles to be picked up from their home.
