ACT Policing officers and NSW Police are conducting a joint operation targeting speed on Lanyon Drive as part of National Road Safety Week, 15–22 May.
The priority for this road safety week was to pledge to drive so others survive.
“With seven road fatalities this year and 11 last year, the ACT has experienced its fair share of loss,” a police spokesperson said. “Sadly, the seventh fatality occurred last night.”
Similarly, there have been 20 fatalities in the Monaro, South Coast, and Hume regions since the beginning of the year.
Detective Acting Inspector, ACT Road Policing, Paul Hutcheson, said that road safety needs to be a focus every week.
“Too often, we work with our counterparts to respond to incidents that can be avoided.
“While our priority is to always keep people safe, there are preventable situations that result in the loss of life, and go on to negatively impact families, friends, the community and our officers for some time.”
Acting Inspector Michael McKechnie from the Hume Highway Patrol said that NSW Police will work alongside ACT Policing to keep road users safe on both sides of the border.
“Remember that your destination will always be there,” Inspector McKechnie said. “Slow down to ensure that you, your passengers, and other motorists can arrive safely. Rest assured, if you are doing the wrong thing while behind the wheel on either side of the border, you will be caught.”
Both services will maintain a strong police presence on roads, and enforce the new 40km/h limits when passing emergency vehicles whose lights are displayed on the side of the road.
