ACT Government: More firefighters needed, health, tennis

ACT Fire & Rescue needs 40 new firefighters, and has put the call out for recruits.

“A career in this service is both a challenging and rewarding one,” a spokesperson said. “Working as a firefighter in ACTF&R you will be fully trained in all areas of firefighting, rescue, and hazardous materials handling. You will be a part of a 24/7 rapid response capability providing assistance during emergency incidents in the ACT, working alongside other emergency services.”

Applications open on 19 February and close on 10 March.

Matthew Shonk, Acting ACTF&R Chief Officer, encouraged individuals from all backgrounds to apply.

“At ACTF&R, we strive to have a workforce that reflects the community we serve,” Mr Shonk said.

“A career in our service can be for all different types of people. Whether you are seeking to challenge yourself, wanting to help the community or looking for a career that fits your lifestyle.

“As a former recruit and firefighter myself, I know firsthand that ACTF&R is the service that could supply this to you, as well as give you many paths to grow your career.”

More health funding

The ACT Government has announced an additional $17 million to expand emergency services in Canberra Hospital’s Critical Services Building (which will open later this year) and critical care across the campus.

The additional investment includes two triage points within the new Emergency Department to reduce waiting times; a six-bed Behavioural Assessment Unit for patients with complex needs; and a bigger Medical Emergency Team.

A new MRI machine in the Critical Services Building will enable more scans per week, helping to manage demand and reducing wait times, the government says.

An additional $27 million (on top of the $122 million in the 2023-24 Budget to set up the Critical Services Building) will fund professional development opportunities and recognition of advanced skills and specialist expertise for nursing, midwifery, and allied health professionals. The government says this will help to retain and attract health workers.

Anyone for tennis?

A development application for Gungahlin Tennis Facility will soon be open for public feedback.

The facility was announced at the 2020 election.

The new facility, to be built in Amaroo, will include 10 full sized courts, two hot shots courts, a hitting wall, LED lighting, female friendly changerooms, parking and a pavilion.

The government is working with Tennis Australia and Tennis ACT to design the facility.

The community can provide feedback through the DA process.

If the DA is approved, the ACT Government will release a tender for a construction contractor.
