The ACT Government has announced it will invest more than a billion dollars in public education facilities over the coming decade, to build new schools, renovate existing ones, and establish state-of-the-art skills and training facilities.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the ACT Government Education Infrastructure plan update outlines the biggest investment in education infrastructure in ACT Government history.
“The ACT Government has a strong pipeline of investment in both new and expanded schools and colleges planned across Canberra to meet expected public school demand well into the future,” education minister Yvette Berry said.
This includes almost $100 million devoted to works at public schools as part of the Public School Infrastructure Renewal Program; roof replacements; infrastructure investment to support inclusive education; and planning for future expansions in key growth areas.
Skills minister Chris Steel said the ACT Government will build new educational and skills facilities and upgrade existing ones.
This includes more than $325 million to deliver a new CIT Campus in Woden, serviced by light rail.
The CIT Yurauna Centre (CIT’s dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Educational Centre of Excellence) will be relocated from the Reid campus to Bruce. “The new centre will offer vocational training and support in literacy, numeracy and communication in a culturally sensitive environment, tailored to the need of First Nations people,” Mr Steel said.
