ACT Labor pledges Pialligo roads revamp if re-elected

Much-needed major road, pedestrian and parking upgrades for Pialligo have been pledged by ACT Labor, if re-elected in October.

The upgrades would include new footpaths on Beltana Road, formalised parking and a new left in/left out intersection with Pialligo Avenue on the corner of Beltana and Kallaroo Roads. There are also plans for new landscaping, and an investigation into “traffic calming measures” for Beltana Road.

ACT Labor Member for Kurrajong, Rachel-Stephen Smith, said she has heard concerns from the local community about pedestrian safety and the need for road upgrades to cater for increasing traffic in the area.

She said the ACT Government last year “worked with the community to come up with a new plan for Beltana Road, Kallaroo Road, footpaths, parking and a new connection with Pialligo Avenue”.

ACT Chief Minister and Labor Leader Andrew Barr said the upgrades would support an area of the ACT that is becoming increasingly popular with visitors to the region.

“We all know that Pialligo is a popular destination for locals and residents in the Canberra region, but it’s also somewhere Canberrans bring friends and family from around the country,” he said.

Mr Barr said the local tourism industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and a re-elected Labor Government would continue to support the sector as part of the government’s Jobs and Economic Recovery Plan.

ACT Labor says the improvements are part of the party’s plan to create more than 250,000 jobs in the Territory by 2025.

The Canberra Liberals have been contacted for comment.
