A Canberra man in his 80s died with COVID-19 yesterday, marking the ACT’s 12th death associated with this outbreak.
The man was receiving intensive care in hospital and had underlying health conditions.
Eight new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the ACT in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday with 79 active cases currently in the ACT.
There are now four COVID-19 patients being treated in hospital, two of whom are in intensive care and none are on a ventilator.
2,051 cases have been recorded in the ACT during this outbreak.
98.1 per cent of ACT residents aged 12 and over are fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, neighbouring NSW has reported a spike in new COVID-19 cases to 403, and one death, in the latest 24-hour period.
Health authorities today revealed five of those people contracted the virus on a Sydney Harbour party boat cruise, and two of them probably have the new Omicron variant.
There are 34 cases of Omicron in the state but no one with the new strain has been admitted to hospital for treatment, NSW Health said on Wednesday.
The new case tally is a jump of 143 infections on the previous day’s numbers.
NSW Health said preliminary results indicate two of the five COVID-positive party boat cruisers have the Omicron variant.
All are isolating at home.
Authorities are contacting about 140 people who signed in with a QR code before boarding the boat on Friday, which left King Street Wharf 9 at 7.30pm and returned about 11pm.
Anyone who was on board, and everyone in their households, are being instructed to immediately get tested and isolate.
