Belconnen explosion destroys stores, one man in hospital

ACT Policing is investigating the cause of an explosion which left a man in hospital and destroyed several stores in Rae St Belconnen about 7.30pm, Monday 27 December.

ACT Fire & Rescue firefighters attended the scene to extinguish blazes in multiple premises. ACT Ambulance Service paramedics also attended, transporting one man to hospital for treatment.

While the full extent of the damage is still being determined, multiple premises were gutted by the fire, and other stores nearby suffered considerable fire and smoke damage.

Several roads in the area were closed, and expected to remain closed into Tuesday morning.

Nearby CCTV footage in Belconnen was uploaded to reddit showing the moment of the explosion.

The Canberra Times are reporting that the explosion and subsequent fire occurred at Turkish Kebab and Pizza.

Another clip uploaded to Twitter showed the debris caused by the explosion.

At this stage the cause of the fire is not known, and remains under investigation.

While police have already spoken to several witnesses, anyone who witnessed the explosion who has not yet talked to police is asked to contact ACT Policing Operations on 131444. Please quote reference number P2042617.
