ACT Policing call on public for information after shooting incident in Coombs

ACT Policing believe a shooting in Coombs in the early hours of the morning was targeted and unrelated to a recent fatal stabbing in nearby Weston Creek.

ACT Policing responded to reports of gunshots in Fairhall street Coombs at around 2.50am and discovered a vehicle with multiple bullet holes.

ACT Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Steel would not confirm the number of gunshots in the vehicle, which is believed to be around 11, but he did say police had recovered three shot gun casings from the scene.

“Any incident involving a firearm is treated very seriously by police,” he said.

“We ask members of the public to come forward with any information they have including any suspicious vehicles.”

They can call crime stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

Detective Steel said they had received “a couple of different reports of vehicles” in the area at the time.

It’s believed the house associated with the vehicle had been recently raided by police, but Detective Steel said the shooting incident is being treated as a separate incident.

Detective Steel assured the wider community they shouldn’t be concerned about future attacks in the suburb.

“Canberra is still a safe place to live, these are isolated incidents, crime is down in the Molongo Valley from previous years,” Detective Steel said.

“Obviously, these are serious incidents and we are treating them as such.”
