ACT Policing seizes $385K worth of cocaine

A tip off from the public and a drug-detection sniffer dog both played a vital role in ACT Policing seizing half a kilogram of cocaine over the weekend.

At approximately 2.30pm on Saturday 13 June, police stopped a Mitsubishi Triton on Downard Street, Calwell.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered approximately half a kilogram of cocaine, which was seized immediately. The estimated current street value of the cocaine is $385,000, and police believe all of it was destined for distribution within the ACT.

A man is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Detective Acting Inspector Robert Rose, of ACT Policing Criminal Investigations, said this seizure showed police and the community are working together to prevent drugs being sold to the Canberra community.

“We appreciate any information from the public that leads to an arrest, and this tip-off means hundreds of thousands of dollars of illegal drugs off Canberra’s streets,” Detective Acting Inspector Rose said.

“This is a very good result for us and the Canberra community.

“If you’re trying to sell drugs in the ACT, no matter how careful you think you’re being, remember there’s always someone who could tell us what you’re doing.

“By seizing these drugs, we are reducing drug harm. This results in stronger families and a stronger community. We are committed to disrupting the supply of drugs to our community and reducing the damage they cause to so many lives.”

ACT Policing continues to target and disrupt the illicit production, distribution and trafficking of drugs in the ACT.

Earlier this month, a 30-year-old Queanbeyan East man was pulled over by police, who conducted a vehicle stop on a gold Mercedes on Sutton Road, Kowen, ACT.

A search warrant was executed on the vehicle with the assistance of the AFP Canine Team and approximately 500g of cocaine with an estimated street value of $385,000 was located in the vehicle.

The man was arrested and later charged with trafficking in a controlled drug. He faced the ACT Magistrates Court on 6 June charged with drug trafficking.

Anyone with information regarding the manufacture or sale of illicit drugs to is urged contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
