ACT records 13 COVID-19 cases, Omicron infections up to 40

The ACT has recorded 13 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm last night as Omicron infections rise in the Territory.

Active cases in Canberra are up to 112 with the total cases from the current outbreak now at 2,167.

Three people remain in hospital with active or cleared coronavirus cases with none in intensive care or requiring ventilation.

Testing numbers were well up with 4,025 negative test results in the past 24 hours, some 2,304 more than the previous day.

The news comes as Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith announced there are now 40 active cases of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in the ACT.

A further 200 people are believed to have been in close contact with those infected with Omicron.

Stephen-Smith said a large number of cases stemmed from people who tested positive after arriving in Canberra from interstate.

“The majority of our cases were interstate acquired, rather than being locally acquired, so we still weren’t seeing a high level of local community transmission,” she told ABC radio.

Despite the increase in cases in NSW, the ACT Government is not planning to change current travel restrictions.

“At the moment, we are not considering changes to interstate travel into the ACT but obviously we monitor the situation in NSW very closely and every day,” she said.

Vaccination bookings for children aged between five and 11 have opened ahead of the rollout starting from 10 January.

An estimated 46,000 children will be eligible.

Meanwhile, NSW recorded 2,501 new cases and Victoria reported 1,302 new infections.
