ACT records 19 new COVID-19 cases

The ACT has recorded 19 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, with six of the new cases infectious while in the community.

There are now 121 active cases associated with this outbreak.

Of the 19 new cases, 17 are linked to the Territory’s current outbreak with two of them still under investigation.

There are now three positive cases in hospital, two which are not related to COVID symptoms while the other is receiving care for COVID-19 but does not require breathing support at this time.

A cluster of 14 has developed in the ACT disability sector, including support workers.

There is one case linked to the Australian National University.

As of 9am today, ACT Health continues to work with over 15,400 people who have self-identified as close contacts of ACT outbreaks.

Over 3,600 tests were collected from both government and private providers across the ACT yesterday.

ACT Pathology and the private providers returned 4,586 negative test results in the 24 hours to 9am today.

The vaccination rollout continues across the ACT with the total number of vaccine doses administered now at 186,420.

The 19 new cases was over double the total cases announced on Saturday, but Chief Minister Andrew Barr said this was a reflection of the slight change in the reporting cut-off time to 8pm daily.

“It does reflect the situation that we face, there will still be new cases in the days ahead,” he warned reporters in Canberra on Sunday.

“What we are striving for is that all of those new cases are not infectious in the community.”

The ACT exposure sites list was updated last night with over 320 locations listed while Assembly pub in Braddon has been reclassified as an ‘investigation location’.

Anyone who was at the Assembly pub on Lonsdale Street on Saturday 7 August from 7pm to 11.59pm has been asked to come forward for testing to help contact tracers find the source of the ACT COVID-19 outbreak.

In a statement issued this afternoon ACT Health has advised the following:

Case connected to Housing ACT complex

ACT Health is investigating if Condamine Court in Turner, which is a Housing ACT complex, is an exposure location connected to one of the current active cases of COVID-19. Currently, there are no cases in residents of the complex.

ACT Health is working closely with a broad range of partners, including Housing ACT and the Community Services Directorate to communicate directly with those affected.

This situation is still evolving, and the focus is on supporting the tenants and their needs.

Cases in disability sector

ACT Health can confirm there is a cluster of cases in the disability sector currently being managed.

At this stage there are 14 cases as part of the cluster, including four clients, seven support workers, one tradesperson and two NSW support workers that are linked to the ACT cases.

ACT Health has been working closely with all partners including Community Services Directorate, Office for Disability, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), disability service providers and sector leaders to ensure that everyone affected has the support they need.

ACT Health and the Community Services Directorate will continue to engage with the disability sector to keep them informed of the current situation and how the government is responding.

Case at Australian National University

ACT Health can confirm that there is a positive case of COVID-19 linked to the ANU.

The ACT government’s public health response teams are working closely with ANU staff and students and communicating directly with those affected.

At this stage, ACT Health has not confirmed any exposure sites on the ANU campus, but this remains under investigation.
