Emma Sckrabei has been named as the 2019 ACT Woman of the Year, for her work in delivering SPARK (Ginninderry’s Training and Education Initiative), the Women Return to Work Workshop Program and providing training opportunities and pathways for girls into the building and construction industry.
The ACT Woman of the Year Awards was held on Thursday 7 March, the eve of International Women’s Day (IWD). The theme for this year’s IWD is #BalanceforBetter, highlighting the improvements for individuals and society that can be achieved through improved gender equality.
Morgan Marshall was named ACT Young Woman of the Year for her work with Robogals, and Dr Aunty Anne Martin AM has been named ACT Senior Woman of the Year for her work in advancing Indigenous rights.
A Ministerial Award for her exceptional contribution to raising the status of women in the ACT over many years through her various roles has been given to Marcia Williams. An honourable mention has also been given for Helen Petrou, who passed away this year, for her significant contribution in the emergency services sector.
CDS progress report
The ACT Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission has released a progress report outlining its draft findings and recommendations in relation to the price and competition impacts of the ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).
The draft recommendations aim to improve the operation of the CDS, make it more transparent and increase the stability of the costs invoiced to beverage suppliers.
Based on feedback to date from beverage suppliers, the Commission considers that harmonising the scheme with those in other jurisdictions (particularly NSW) could reduce administrative costs incurred by beverage suppliers, such as ongoing compliance and reporting costs. These administrative costs are likely to be more burdensome for smaller suppliers.

Nominate a young citizen
Nominations for the 2019 Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards close on 18 March. The awards recognise and celebrate young people aged 12-25 who have made significant contributions through their personal endeavours, or who have been actively involved in the ACT community.
There are six categories to nominate in this year: Personal Achievement, Individual Community Service, Group Achievement, Environmental and Sustainability Award, Arts and Multimedia Award and Young Canberra Citizen of the Year.
Winners will be announced on Friday 12 April at an awards ceremony, marking the start of ACT Youth Week.
