The Hon. Acting Judge Michael Adams QC has been appointed as the ACT’s acting Integrity Commissioner, Speaker Joy Burch MLA announced today, Tuesday 22 December.
His appointment follows the resignation of the inaugural ACT Integrity Commissioner, the Hon. Dennis Cowdroy AO QC, who will step down in January.
Mr Adams was appointed a Justice of the NSW Supreme Court in 1998. He retired from the court in 2017 to begin a three-year term as the inaugural Chief Commissioner of the NSW Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
During this time, Mr Adams worked as a Judge in the UN Disputes Tribunal for a year and for five years part-time as a Judge on the Court of Appeal of the Solomon Islands.
Mr Adams’ appointment as acting ACT Integrity Commissioner will take effect from 12 January 2021. He will be appointed for up to six months.
Emeritus Professor John McMillan AO has been appointed as alternate acting Integrity Commissioner. His appointment as alternate Commissioner will come into effect as necessary.
Professor McMillan has held the statutory positions of Commonwealth Ombudsman, Integrity Commissioner (Acting) for the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity, Australian Information Commissioner, and NSW Ombudsman (Acting).
The Integrity Commission was established in 2019 to investigate and expose corruption in the ACT public sector.
Executive recruitment Ford Kelly Executive Connections are now searching for a permanent ACT Integrity Commissioner. It is expected the recruitment will be finalised in 2021, and the new Commissioner will be appointed by mid-year.
