ACT’s Oscar Andrews claims national claycourt title

ACT’s Oscar Andrews is the 14/u Boys National Champion in the Australian Junior Claycourt Championships after defeating Ashton Chan (NSW) 6-0, 6-1 today in front of a home crowd at the Canberra Tennis Centre.

Andrews is excited about his win. “I am happy with the win. I played my own game, and I wanted to come into the finals aggressively,” he said.

Tennis ACT CEO Kim Kachel said it was “a huge achievement” for Andrews to win a national title.

“There is a rich history of champions winning these national titles and it’s a great step on a player’s journey. Oscar now joins locals including Nick Kyrgios, Annerly Poulos and Charlie Camus all winning national championships over recent years.  We wish all athletes all the best for the future,” Kachel said.

“It has been fantastic to host the Australian Junior Claycourt Championships this week.

“The weather has been outstanding, and it’s a brilliant event for the ACT and the whole region.

“We had 128 players this week in Canberra, plus their families, coaches, support teams and officials from all around Australia. It’s a great event not only for locals, but for everyone who travels to the event and can experience all that Canberra has to offer.

“The event has a really significant economic impact for Canberra.

“The facilities at the Canberra Tennis Centre are world-class, highlighted by the 12 impressive European Claycourts which the players competed on.”
