An AFP employee in his 40s appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court today after being accused of attempting to murder his wife in a drunken rage at the couple’s residence.
The man has been charged with attempted murder, intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to sections 19(1) and 24(1) of the Crimes Act 1900 (ACT).
On Friday 5 June, when police arrived at the home, it is believed the woman was found with a large carving knife lodged in her forearm after trying to defend herself.
The man is reported to have become aggressive when the couple went to bed and allegedly said to his wife: “I am going to kill you” while grabbing the back of her neck. He is accused of punching her body and face and also choking her.
It is alleged that the couple’s daughter screamed at the husband to stop but he did not put down the knife. He then charged at his wife and the blade became lodged in her arm as she defended herself.
The man then said: “I’m going to wait outside for them to arrest me.”
Police then arrived and arrested the man. He was charged by ACT Policing on 6 July following the incident in Gungahlin on Friday night, 5 July.
The AFP says it will be making no further comment on the matter.
