All ACT school zones back in force for term two

While many school children are participating in online learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, 40km/h school zone speed limits are back into effect at all ACT schools for the start of the new school term today, Tuesday 28 April.

ACT Policing is reminding motorists that these speed restrictions are in force on weekdays between 8am and 4pm across the ACT, and apply to all school zones. Despite widespread home schooling, many schools are open for students and others will continue to have teachers and staff on site.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman, said drivers who choose to ignore school zone speed limits would face tough penalties.

โ€œThe Canberra community should realise that all school zones are in operation and COVID-19 has not changed our focus on everyoneโ€™s safety on our roads,โ€ he said.

โ€œEven though most children are conducting lessons from home, there are still some students – as well as teachers and other staff – attending schools, so school zone speed limits are still in operation to help protect all road users.

โ€œOver the past few months, weโ€™ve seen health directions and advice change quickly. The best thing we can do is tell you a sure thing that wonโ€™t change all term โ€“ that a 40km/h limit will apply in all schools zones between 8am and 4pm.

โ€œPolice will have a presence at the schools where children are learning and continue to proactively target all schools to ensure drivers are getting the message.

โ€œThe 40km/h speed limit is necessary in school zones because it gives motorists extra time to stop in unexpected situations.”

Access Canberra will also be working to support community safety around school zones, with mobile speed vans in operation.

Canberrans are also reminded to park safely and legally across our city, to support the safety of all road users and pedestrians.
