AMC prison rioters to face court this month

Two prison detainees will appear in court this month for their alleged involvement in a riot at the Alexander Maconochie Centre in May.

The two 23-year-old men will be charged with arson, obstructing a territory official, property damage, and affray.

One man faced the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday, Tuesday 10 August; the other man will face the Court on Tuesday, 24 August.

As a result of an investigation by ACT Corrective Services, these two men were deemed most responsible for the incident, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

These appearances are ‘first mentions’ only, the spokesperson said. The matters will be heard fully at a later date (to be determined by the court).

On Wednesday 12 May, 28 detainees in an AMC remand unit behaved aggressively and refused to comply with Corrections Officers’ directions, a Justice and Community Safety Directorate (JACS) spokesperson stated at the time.

ACT Policing, ACT Fire and Rescue, and ACT Ambulance responded to the incident. The incident lasted several hours, and resulted in extensive damage to the centre.

No staff were injured. All detainees involved were medically assessed before being re-housed, and no one required hospital admission.

Following the riot, ACT Corrective Services notified the ACT Insurance Authority (ACTIA) of the damage. ACTCS is determining the cost of repairs.

The riot followed an incident in November when 27 detainees lit fires in prison yards and cells, and armed themselves with broom handles and other everyday items.
