An eggcellent Easter hunt idea

So, Canberra, we’ve been participating in teddy bear hunts to entertain the young and young-at-heart on neighbourhood walks for the past few weeks; now it’s time to switch out teddies for (pictures of) Easter eggs!

The Big Canberra Easter Egg Hunt is inspired by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who recently reassured younger Kiwis that the Easter Bunny (and Tooth Fairy) are essential workers.

In a Facebook message for the kids of New Zealand, Ms Ardern wrote: “Because we’re all in isolation at the moment, the Easter Bunny might not make it to every house this year (they probably have to look after their own Bunny family too). So just in case, I’m wondering if you’ll help me create an Easter egg hunt for all the children in your neighbourhood?”

ACT Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry has adapted Ms Ardern’s idea for Canberra with our local community being encouraged either to draw your own Easter egg, or colour in or decorate a ready-made CBR design, and pop it in the window of your home for other children to find.

The design is available for download as a pdf from Yvette Berry’s website.

Kidsafe ACT has also got in the spirit of the egg hunt with their own design available from their Facebook page [@KidsafeACT].

Looking to get extra creative with your egg decorating? Why not try making a collage egg.

This simple project is courtesy of Beautiful Eggs illustrated by Alice Lindstrom; a large format board book for Easter that celebrates traditions of egg-decorating from around the world in cut-paper illustration. $16.99, Scribble; all good book stores.

Method

Cut an egg shape out of thick A4 coloured card.

Next, take coloured paper and cut it into different shapes, stars, flowers, squares, circles, triangles or anything else you can think of. Make each shape about 3cm big.

Glue to shapes onto your egg to create your own collage egg design.
