If you’ve changed address and haven’t updated your details on the electoral roll in the lead up to 17 October’s ACT election, hop to it! You have until 6pm tonight to do so.
Recent legislative changes mean that if you’re not enrolled at all, you can do so right up to, and on, the final day of voting – Saturday 17 October.
The ACT Electoral Commissioner Damian Cantwell said while enrolling at the polling location is an option, enrolling online is more efficient and COVID-safe. He said the ACT has the most complete electoral roll in the country, with more than 99% enrolment.
The 2020 ACT Legislative Assembly election period is officially underway, with the caretaker period for the ACT Government beginning today, Friday 11 September.
Mr Cantwell said this year’s election will be different to those in previous years, with COVID-19 safety measures being implemented across the territory. Canberrans are being encouraged to vote early this year to avoid large crowds at polling places.
“At this year’s election we have tripled the availability of early voting services and are encouraging everyone to vote early and vote safely”, he said.
Fifteen early voting centres will be open every day between 28 September and 16 October, while 82 polling places will be open on the final day of the voting period on 17 October.
“All enrolled Canberrans may cast a vote at any voting location in the ACT, at any time during the three-week voting period – starting on Monday 28 September.
“We’ve consulted closely with the ACT Chief Health Officer regarding the delivery of this election and the extended voting period is just one of many measures designed to uphold appropriate social distancing and hygiene requirements.”
Today also marks the start of the official candidate nomination period, with the formal announcement of candidates to come on Thursday 24 September.
