Another asthma thunderstorm warning for the ACT this weekend

ACT Health is warning of the risk of another possible thunderstorm asthma event in the ACT tomorrow, Saturday 28 November.

ACT Health has advised ACT residents to remain inside during a thunderstorm, particularly the gusts of wind before the storm.

“If you develop asthma symptoms, use your reliever (blue puffer) medication and follow your asthma action plan, if you have one.

“If you experience asthma symptoms that are not relieved by usual asthma treatment, you should seek further urgent medical advice. In the event of a medical emergency, you should call 000.”

The risk is increased by the Territory’s elevated pollen levels and the possibility of severe storms on Saturday. ACT Health has issued four thunderstorm asthma warnings in the last month.

In a statement, ACT Health said the risk of thunderstorm asthma is higher this year due to wetter than usual conditions which have encouraged grass growth, and increased storms in the region.

“Not all thunderstorms produce an asthma event, and thunderstorm asthma is a rare event,” the statement said.

Canberrans have also been reminded to see their doctor or pharmacists to make sure treatments for asthma and hayfever are up to date during the pollen season.

Canberra’s pollen levels can be monitored with the AirRater app, and daily levels of grass pollen levels in the ACT via the Canberra Pollen Count and Forecast Service.
