Raiders announce Hall of Fame
The Canberra Raiders have launched an official Hall of Fame, the timing coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the club’s maiden premiership in 1989.
The Hall of Fame was announced at the club’s season launch on Friday 1 March with 14 members inducted includingChris O’Sullivan, Ashley Gilbert, Dean Lance, Gary Belcher, Gary Coyne, John Ferguson, Mal Meninga, Steve Walters, Brent Todd, Laurie Daley, Glenn Lazarus, Bradley Clyde, Ricky Stuart and Tim Sheens (coach 1988-1996).
The Raiders will induct three more members into the Hall of Fame mid-season, when they hold their inaugural and annual Hall of Fame dinner event on 19 July. Categories for the Hall of Fame include player, coach, referee and contributor.
Tiny trainers get adults moving
Almost two-thirds of Australian adults are insufficiently active and Sport Australia has enlisted a band of “Tiny Trainers” to help get Australians moving.
Sport Australia research shows parents heavily influence the physical activity of their children. Sport Australia’s general manager of marketing customer insights and analytics Louise Eyres said the ‘Tiny Trainers’ campaign flips the script and sees children encouraging adults to get moving.
“Our AusPlay research shows children with at least one inactive parent are 68% more likely to be inactive themselves,” Eyres said. “So if parents and adults get active, then children are more likely to follow and be active themselves.”

Blackball champion
Local pool player, Cindy Blackmore is the first player from Canberra to win an Australian national singles title in any form of cue sports, recently becoming the Australian Blackball Ladies Champion. The Australian Blackball Nationals were held in Victoria on 11-16 February. Apart from Cindy’s win, the ACT Ladies team finished runners-up; Phillip Morton finished as the Australian Masters (players aged 50+) runner-up; and the ACT Opens A team made the quarter finals.
Men’s team sprint claim sixth
ACT cyclist Nathan Hart, along with team mates Patrick Constable (SA) and teenage debutant Matthew Richardson (WA) finished sixth in the men’s team sprint at the 2019 UCI Track World Championships. Sixth fastest in qualifying, the trio was edged out of the medal finals by eventual silver medallists France in the first round.
