Canberra United signings
Goalkeepers Shamiran Khamis and Annalee Grove have become the latest duo to #GoGreen and sign with Canberra United for the 2019/20 Westfield W-League season. Khamis is preparing for her second season with Canberra United, having joined the club from Sydney FC last year, while Grove, a Young Matilda, joins United after spending Season 11 of the Westfield W-League with the Brisbane Roar. Norwegian international Elise Thorsnes has signed for the 2019/20 season having previously played for the side in 2017/18, while Nikola Orgill has also re-signed with the club and will be one of the co-captains for Heather Garriock’s Season 12 side.
Winning start for UC Capitals
The UC Capitals opened their WNBL season with a 90-83 win over Adelaide Lightning. The Capitals fought back from a 10 point deficit at half-time to record the victory. The UC Capitals host Townsville Fire on Sunday 20 October 2pm at the National Convention Centre, Canberra.
Vikings ready for semi-final showdown
The Canberra Vikings will host Fijian Drua in a semi-final at Viking Park, Wanniassa on Sunday 20 October 3pm. The Vikings defeated NSW Country Eagles 27-19 to secure the home semi-final while Fijian Drua qualified for the top four with a 26-24 win over Queensland Country. The Western Force plays Brisbane City in the other semi-final. The match coincides with the Vikings Family Fun Day with a jumping castle and face painting available from 2pm. Pre-match action is provided by the U18 teams from Gungahlin Eagles and Melbourne Brothers with that match starting at 12pm. Entry on the day is via a gold coin donation with all money raised going to Rural Aid.
Canberra Chill results
It was a mixed weekend for the Canberra Chill in their matches against Perth Thundersticks with both matches going to a shootout. The men’s side won 3-3 (3-1) while the women’s side lost 1-1 (0-1). Canberra Chill is away to Hockey Club Melbourne on Friday 18 October before hosting Tassie Tigers at the National Hockey Centre, Lyneham on Sunday 20 October 2pm.
Baseball selection
Team Australia has announced an experienced roster for its Premier12 debut in South Korea next month. The 28-man squad includes 18 players who represented Australia at the 2017 World Baseball Classic in Japan. Canberra Cavalry players in the squad include David Kandilas, Steven Kent, Robbie Perkins and Dushan Ruzic. To avoid a clash with Premier12, the Australian Baseball League season is scheduled to start on 21 November.
Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club upgrade
Works have started to upgrade the Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club’s facilities at Lake Tuggeranong College in a collaborative effort between Sport and Recreation, the Education Directorate, Lake Tuggeranong College and Libraries ACT.
The works will include an upgrade to amenities like showers for the club and improved storage areas for both the club and school. The upgrade will also provide base building infrastructure improvements to ensure compliance with the Building Code and regulations. In addition to the $200,000 election commitment, the ACT Government allocated a further $250,000 to the expanded scope bringing the total project budget to $450,000. Completion of works is expected in early December.
