Naden’ s New York state of mind
Canberra’ s Travis Naden (pictured) has been named as part of the 2019 Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) squad. This is his seventh year trying out for IMP. Born and raised in Canberra, Wiradjuri man Naden will train under Rob de Castella and IMP head coach Adrian Dodson-Shaw, preparing to run the New York City Marathon on 3 November. The squad of 12 also includes Kate Axten, a Western Arrernte woman from Central Australia, who was born in Canberra but moved to Alice Springs as an infant. In addition to the rigorous training, the squad will also undertake a Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation, first aid and CPR certification, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health first aid certification, and Level 1 Recreational Run Leader accreditation.
ACT archers on target
ACT archers Astin Darcy, Craig Newbery and Stuart Atkins, have been selected to represent Australia internationally. Astin recently returned from the World Cup, Stage 1 in Medellin, Columbia and is working towards earning a place on the Olympic team for Tokyo 2020; Craig will be competing in World Archery Para and Vision Impaired Championships in ‘ s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands on 3-9 June; and Stuart will be competing in the 2019 World Crossbow Championships in Ennigerloh, Germany on 6-10 June.
Bowlers ready to strike
Zone Bowling – Tuggeranong will host the 31st running of the National Tenpin Bowling Championship for persons with a disability starting on 5 June. Bowlers will compete in individual and team events culminating in the Masters event on Friday 14 June. The event is set to attract over 400 bowlers.
Brave down Dogs
The CBR Brave have fought back from two goals down in the third period to defeat the Sydney Ice Dogs 6-4 in Sydney on Saturday 25 May. The Brave host Perth Thunder in a double header at the Brave Cave on 1-2 June; shop.cbrbrave.com.au/home-tickets/
Testing time for Raiders
The Raiders depth is set to be tested with Josh Hodgson joining the growing injury list with a broken thumb. Hodgson received the injury during the Raiders’ 22-16 loss to the Cowboys at GIO Stadium on Saturday 25 May, and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. The side will also be without Josh Papalii (QLD), Nick Cotric and Jack Wighton (NSW) who have been selected for State of Origin duty on 5 June. The Raiders take on the Bulldogs on Saturday 1 June.
Kandilas re-signs with Cavs
The Canberra Cavalry have confirmed the re-signing of outfielder David Kandilas for a further two seasons, adding to the ongoing list of players returning for 2019-20 ABL season.
Judo medals
Former young English judo player Lewis Bell has performed strongly in senior boys 60kg division since moving to Canberra and joining Olympia Judo Club. During recent International Judo competitions, Lewis won three gold medals dominating the senior boys 60kg division and being undefeated.
Nordic walking
The Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) recently launched an innovative partnership with Canberra’ s rapidly growing community of Nordic walkers to enable them to take advantage of the bushland on offer at the ANBG.
