UC Capitals beat Perth Lynx
The University of Canberra Capitals are one step closer to a grand final berth after defeating Perth Lynx 95-76 in game one of their best-of-three semi-final series. The Caps were on fire from the outset in front of a 2,000 strong crowd at the AIS Arena on 25 January. The series now heads to Perth for game two tonight, Thursday 31 January, with game three, if required, scheduled for Saturday 2 February 7.30pm at the AIS Arena. The schedule for the grand final series is: Game one on Saturday 9 February, game two on Wednesday 13 February before game three (if necessary) is played on Saturday 16 February. The grand final series will follow a home-away-home format.
Cavalry bow out
The Canberra Cavalry’s season has come to an end at the hands of the Brisbane Bandits. The Cavs set up the semi-final showdown with the Brisbane outfit after defeating Melbourne Aces 5-0 in the first ever wildcard game on Wednesday 23 January. The Bandits won game one 18-1 before the Cavs fought back to claim game two 8-6; however, the Bandits won game three 9-5 to clinch the series.
Test Match at Manuka
Manuka Oval will host its first ever Test Match on 1-5 February when Australia take on Sri Lanka. Australia won the first Test by an innings and 40 runs. As at 9.30am Tuesday 29 January, Ticketek listed the general public allocation of tickets for day two of the Test as “currently exhausted”.
Roar too strong for United
Canberra United recorded a 4-1 loss to Brisbane Roar on Friday 25 January. Meantime, United’s round 12 match against Melbourne Victory has been rescheduled for Tuesday 5 February at Seiffert Oval, kicking off at 6pm. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday 17 January but was abandoned under the FFA thunderstorm and lightning guidelines. Gates will open at 5pm.
Brumbies defeat Rebels
The Brumbies won their trial match against the Rebels 52-38 on Saturday 26 January at Viking Park. The Brumbies’ next trial match is against the Waratahs in Goulburn on Thursday 7 February 6.30pm. Free entry to Brumbies and Waratahs members and under 18s.
Baseball camp at AIS
Team Australia will take their first step in an important competition cycle as 35 athletes undertake a four-day camp in Canberra next month. The squad will undergo in-depth testing and benchmarking and will be based at the AIS on 7-10 February. The camp will serve as the first opportunity for Premier12 preparation, baseball’s flagship international tournament.
ACT Blackball Pool
Twenty players have been selected, organised into one Ladies team and three Opens team, to compete at the Australian Blackball Pool Nationals in Melbourne on 11-16 February.
Move it AUS grants open
Applications are now open forthe Move It AUS – Participation grants program, which will be managed by Sport Australia. Grants for the four-year program start from $25,000 for local sport and physical activity organisations, through to $1 million grants for national sporting organisations who can deliver large-scale initiatives that align with the Federal Government’s Sport 2030 National Sport Plan. Local rugby:
The 81st season of the John I Dent Cup will start on Saturday 30 March. The 12-team first division competition and nine-team second division competition kick off on the same day. The Women’s Premier and Women’s Development League start on Saturday 4 May.
