Local tennis player Alison Bai recently teamed up with Jaimee Fourlis (Vic) to claim the women’s doubles title at the Apis Canberra International (Bendigo). For Bai and Fourlis it is their second title together after also winning the ACT Claycourt International #2 in March last year. After losing the first set 7-5, the pair recovered to take the second 4-6. In the match tiebreak they fell behind 8-5 before rattling off five consecutive points to claim the title.
UC Capitals bounce back
The UC Capitals returned to form during Round 14 of the WNBL claiming a one-point overtime win over the Melbourne Boomers on Friday 17 January before a 24-point win over the ladder leaders Southside Flyers, 98-74. Keely Froling will be out for a minimum of three weeks after fracturing her nose and cheek during the match against the Boomers. The Capitals took on Perth Lynx at the National Convention Centre on Wednesday 22 January, the result was not known at time of print. They also host the Sydney Uni Flames on Sunday 26 January 5.05pm.
Cavs claim series win
The Canberra Cavalry claimed a series win over the Auckland Tuatara in their series played at the Narrabundah Ball Park from 16-19 January. The Cavalry won their matches 3-2, 11-7, and 7-5 with game four rained out preventing them from claiming the series sweep. Canberra will face the Sydney Blue Sox away, from 23-26 January, in the last regular-season round of the season.
IMP squad search
The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) has begun its annual search for 12 young Indigenous Australians who are ready to take on the challenge of a lifetime. Each year, IMP selects, educates and trains a squad of Indigenous men and women to compete in the TCS New York City Marathon. IMP head coach Adrian Dodson-Shaw will soon embark on a two-month try-out tour across Australia which kicks off in Canberra on Friday 31 January. Open to all Indigenous Australians aged 18 to 30.
