Canberra Raiders Cup confirmed
The Canberra Raiders Cup first grade competition will go ahead this 2020 season with four teams contesting the division: Queanbeyan Blues, Gungahlin Bulls, Woden Valley Rams, and the Canberra Raiders Under 20s side.
Canberra Region Rugby League chairman, Gary Green, said while it is great for the competition to go ahead, “it’s disappointing that more teams couldn’t participate”.
“But it is great to see the support of the Canberra Raiders Under 20s. The CRRL is appreciative of the efforts of the committees from the Rams, Bulls and Blues for getting teams on the field.”
The George Tooke Shield competition will also be going ahead this year, with four, possibly five teams. Reserve grade, Under 19s, Ladies League Tag and the Women’s Tackle competitions are still under development.
The Canberra Raiders Cup competition will start on the weekend of 25 July. Other competition start dates are to be confirmed.
Rugby ready to return
ACT & Southern NSW Rugby have confirmed a return to rugby competitions from 18 July, following further easing of COVID-19 restrictions from the ACT Government.
Contact training resumed in the ACT on 19 June, and will return in NSW from 1 July, giving teams time to prepare for the start of games.
Over 60 clubs across the region returned to formal training 1 June, with participation levels tracking positively towards rugby resuming next month.
All teams have been adhering to the guidelines around training and hygiene standards set out in the, ‘Return to Play Framework’, a critical measure in Rugby’s return moving forward.
Specific details on each competition’s draw will be confirmed at a later date.
Bushfire recovery grants
The Broulee Moruya Football Netball Club, Eurobodalla Netball Association and Sapphire Coast Netball Association have all been successful in round one of the Confident Girls Foundation Bushfire Recovery Grants initiative.
Netball Australia’s official charity, the Confident Girls Foundation, established the Bushfire Relief Appeal in March to support associations and clubs within the netball community that were affected by devastating bushfires that swept the country last summer.
This first round of grants will support clubs and associations to recover, providing funds to help rebuild infrastructure, purchase equipment, cover the cost of registrations and fees, hold clinics and special community events, and supply uniforms, among many other initiatives.

Boost for Braidwood
A number of Braidwood sporting groups have received a funding boost as part of the NSW Government’s latest round of the Local Sports Grants Program.
The successful projects in Braidwood include: $15,000 for the Braidwood Redbacks Rugby Union Club to move ahead with plans to install an electronic scoreboard at the Braidwood Recreation Ground; $11,750 for the Braidwood Pistol and Target Shooting Club to upgrade its pistol range facilities; and $1,930 for the Braidwood Swimming Club to hold formal training courses specialising in water skills and stroke development.
