Caps through to semis
The University of Canberra Capitals finished the regular WNBL season with a 73-71 win over the Adelaide Lightning on Saturday 1 February, the result seeing them finish the season in second position on the competition ladder. The Caps will have home court advantage for their semi-final series against the Melbourne Boomers. The first game is on Sunday 16 February 5pm at the AIS Arena. Game two will be at the State Basketball Centre on Sunday 23 February with the date and venue to be confirmed for game three, if necessary.
Close the Gap fun run
The Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) will host a Deadly Fun Run 5km Walk and Run to acknowledge the Closing the Gap Statement to Parliament, and celebrate Indigenous achievement, on Thursday 13 February 7am at Reconciliation Place, Lake Burley Griffin. Regional Bash results
The ACT Aces lost to Lake Mac Attack by six runs in the final of the Plan B Regional Bash at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday 26 January. In the inaugural NSW Women’s Regional Bash final, the ACT Aces fell to the Coffs Coast Chargers by 42 runs on Tuesday 21 January.
Come and try
Women’s Masters: Capital Football is hosting come and try days in February for women aged 35+. The sessions will teach core football skills, basic fitness drills and the rules of the game. You don’t even need to own boots or shin pads to come along. Sessions are being held on 9, 16 and 23 February 10am-1pm at Waramanga Playing Fields. Snooker: Learn how to play snooker at the Canberra Southern Cross Club Jamison on Saturday 15 February. Run by the Billiards and Snooker Association of the ACT’s accredited coach, there will be a demonstration match at 1.30pm followed by an information session at 2pm.
Wheelchair rugby league: Canberra Region Rugby League is inviting anyone interested in playing NRL Wheelchair Rugby League to come and try days at Queanbeyan Indoor Courts, Yass Road, Queanbeyan, on Sunday 23 February and Sunday 1 March 2.30-5pm. To register your interest, email [email protected]
Open court sessions
Tennis Australia’s newest participation program, Open Court Sessions,has kicked off at clubs across the ACT region. They are designed to encourage people to come together over food, drink and music, with a social hit of tennis on the side. All equipment is provided and players will be matched up so there’s no need to find a doubles partner. Twenty-four clubs from the ACT and region will be hosting events over the coming weeks; play.tennis.com.au
Brakes on Big Canberra Bike Ride
Pedal Power ACT has cancelled the Big Canberra Bike Ride due to take place on 1 March, saying the decision to cancel was not taken lightly. Pedal Power will be contacting people who have already registered to organise a refund of their fees.
Equipment boost for Little A’s
Canberra’s little athletics will start the new year with brand new equipment thanks to grants totalling nearly $12,000 from the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund. Tuggeranong Tornadoes purchased new discuses, shot puts and javelins; Woden Thunder received hurdles; and Ginninderra Little Athletics sourced new electronic starting guns. The clubs are among the 316 centres across Australia to share in over $1.1 million in sports equipment grants from funds raised through the sale of Coles’ Community Chiller Bags.
