Raiders recruit in ‘incident’
In a statement on Monday 27 January, the Canberra Raiders said they have been made aware of an incident involving new recruit Curtis Scott. The club has informed the NRL integrity unit and will work with them on the investigation. The club will be making no further comment. In other news, the club has agreed to release Joey Leilua from the final year of his contract to take up a new deal with the Wests Tigers.
Brumbies ready to play
The Brumbies recorded two trial wins over the Melbourne Rebels last week in preparation for the Super Rugby season. The Brumbies won game one 34-31 and game two 45-14. The Brumbies’ Super Rugby campaign, led by captain Allan Alaalatoa, starts on Friday 31 January against the Reds at GIO Stadium, Canberra. Kick off 7.15pm. In other news, the club has confirmed that Les Leulua’iali-Makin has ruptured his achilles while playing in Japan, which will rule him out of the 2020 Super Rugby season, while Connal McInerney has agreed to an early contract extension, keeping him at the club until the end of 2021.
Cavs reach wildcard game
The Canberra Cavalry split their series against the Sydney Blue Sox in the final regular round of Australian Baseball League action on 23-26 January. The Cavs won the first two games, 3-0 and 2-0, before the Blue Sox fought back for wins in games three and four. The result saw the Cavs qualify for the playoffs, taking on Perth Heat in a wildcard game on Tuesday 28 January. The result was not known at time of print. The winner will play a best-of-three ABL semi-final against top-seeded Adelaide starting on Thursday or Friday night.
Nadal ousts Kyrgios
Canberra product Nick Kyrgios is out of the Australian Open after falling to tennis world No.1 Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the tournament. In a tough contest, Nadal prevailed in four sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Top flight cricket
Manuka Oval will host three matches of the women’s CommBank T20 INTL Tri-Series between Australia, India and England. The first match is on Friday 31 January between India and England with Australia up against England on Saturday 1 February and India on Sunday 2 February.
Caps secure two wins
The UC Capitals’s run of form has continued with an 89-75 win over the Perth Lynx on Wednesday 22 January followed by an 82-66 win over the Sydney Uni Flames on Sunday 26 January. The UC Capitals have one last game of the regular season remaining. They will host Adelaide Lightning at the National Convention Centre, Canberra on Saturday 1 February 5.05pm.
United’s slump continues
Canberra United’s poor run of form has continued with a 3-0 loss to Melbourne Victory on Sunday 26 January. United hosts Adelaide United in their final home game of the season at McKellar Park on Sunday 16 February. Kick-off 4pm.
