The Canberra Vikings will have to wait a little longer for their maiden National Rugby Championship crown, going down to the Western Force 41-3 on Saturday 26 October in Perth.
It was the Vikings’ third attempt to claim the title after reaching the decider in 2015 and 2017, and the visitors were well in the contest, trailing 7-3 at the break.
But the flood gates opened as the Force piled on five second-half tries. Andrew Deegan added four conversions and one penalty to secure the Force’s victory in front of home fans.
Western Force lock Fergus Lee-Warner won the 2019 Phil Waugh Medal for best on ground.
The result also saw the Minderoo Foundation donate $600,000 to the 2019 Telethon Appeal in Perth. The Foundation had pledged to donate $100,000 for every try the Western Force scored in the final and $25,000 for every Canberra Vikings try to the appeal.
Victory for PM’s XI
The PM’s XI side claimed a one wicket win over Sri Lanka in their T20 match at Manuka Oval on 24 October. The PM’s XI chased down Sri Lanka’s 8-131 with one ball and one wicket to spare. Canberra local Djali Bloomfield finished with 2-17 off his three overs.

UQ triumph in Sevens Series
The University of Queensland claimed the 2019 Aon University Sevens Series title after winning gold against Griffith University in the final leg of the competition. Round hosts, the University of Canberra, took out the bronze medal after defeating University of Adelaide 31-26. Overall, UC finished the series in fourth with 54 points with UC player Rachel Crothers named in the Aon University Sevens Series Dream Team.
Touch Football championships
The School Sport Australia Touch Football Championships are being held at Deakin Playing Fields this week (28 October-1 November) with over 430 students representing ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC and WA competing.
Visiting karate master
Sensei Kazuo Terauchi will teach more than 150 participants at an all-ages karate training seminar and tournament in Canberra. Sensei Terauchi, who holds the second-highest rank of 9th Dan Black Belt, will be the special guest instructor at the Australian Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-do Federation (AOGKF) National Gasshuku and Friendship Tournament at Mount Stromlo High School, Waramanga from 1-3 November.
Caps lose on the road
The UC Capitals recorded two losses on the road in Round 3 of the WNBL going down 107-72 against the Melbourne Boomers on Friday 25 October and 81-75 against the Sydney Uni Flames on Sunday 27 October. The UC Capitals host Sydney Uni Flames at the AIS on Saturday 2 November, 5pm.
Canberra Chill results
The Canberra Chill women’s side will be hoping results go their way this weekend to secure a spot in the Hockey One finals. The Chill have a bye this weekend and currently sit in fourth position after a 4-0 loss to the Adelaide Fire on Saturday 26 October. In other results, the men’s side defeated Adelaide Fire 6-4.
