Brave’s record setting season
The CBR Brave defeated the Newcastle Northstars 6-1 to end the regular season on a high.This year, the side set Australian Ice Hockey League records for most wins (26), most points (79), largest winning streak (17) and most goals scored (161). The Brave have a bye this weekend before finals start on 31 August. In other news, Village Building Co has joined the multi-sport organisation of the Canberra Cavalry and CBR Brave as a major sponsor.
Olympic claim Premiership
The NPL1 Capital Football Premiership was decided on the final day of the season, with Canberra Olympic thumping Tigers FC 4-0 to secure their third Premiership in four years. Canberra FC defeated Gungahlin United 3-1 to secure a spot in the top four, while Monaro and Tuggeranong finished their season with wins. In NPLW, Belconnen won 8-0 over Canberra United Academy in the final round of the regular season; Gungahlin United scraped into finals despite losing heavily to Canberra FC 8-1; Woden-Weston drew 0-0 with Monaro, and Wagga City wrapped up their season with a win against Canberra Olympic 3-1.
Walking Football
A new Walking Football initiative is being funded by a $1.8 million grant from the Federal Government and aims toimprove physical and mental health for seniors. More details: playfootball.com.au/ffa-walking-football
Coaching scholarships
Thirteen female coaches across a variety of sports recently received up to $5,000 for Elite Coaching Scholarships to help them progress to higher level coaching positions. The scholarships aim to assist to bridge the current gap in coaching development opportunities for female coaches and link participants, through their sports, to high level coaching education and resources.
Support for young athletes
Twenty Lord’s Taverners ACT Scholarships were recently awarded for 2019. The scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to local young athletes with a disability. This year’s program saw Lord’s Taverners donate $10,000 donated to, collectively, support the scholarship recipients.
