The Canberra Raiders have received a huge boost ahead of the 2020 season, with star playmaker Jack Wighton re-signing with the club on a new four-year deal which will see him in green until the end of 2024.

Highlanders end Brumbies’ streak

After claiming 10 victories in a row at home, the Brumbies’ streak came to an end by one point on Saturday 15 February. Hosting the Highlanders at GIO Stadium Canberra, the visitors claimed the 23-22 win after the 80-minute mark thanks to a try to Teariki Ben-Nicholas converted by Josh Ioane. The Brumbies’ next match is away to the Chiefs at FMG Stadium in Waikato, New Zealand on Saturday 22 February. In Super W, the Brumbies defeated RugbyWA 29-10 in the opening round of the 2020 competition at GIO Stadium. The Brumbies Super W side will take on the Melbourne Rebels on Saturday 22 February in Melbourne.

United snap losing streak

Canberra United snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Adelaide United at McKellar Park on Sunday 16 February. A crowd of 1,202 attended United’s final home game for the season which saw Laura Hughes net her first goal in the W-League. Leena Khamis and Simone Charley added extras in the second half to secure the win. United are away to Brisbane Roar in their last game of the season on Sunday 23 February.

25th annual Rose Tournament


Some of NSW’s best lawn bowling competitors will gather in Goulburn on 20-23 February for the Goulburn Railway Bowling Club’s annual Rose Tournament. There will be 56 teams (28 men’s and 28 women’s teams) consisting of three bowlers each, competing over the four days. Admission: spectators free.

Raiders’player Sia Soliola is the speaker at the next Menslink Midweeker on Wednesday 26 February 5.30pm. Free to attend, the event is open to all and is at Gryphons Caffe and Bar, Griffith. A 2020 season Raiders’ jersey signed by the current squad will be auctioned off. The winning bidder will also be able to request a personal message and autograph on the jersey from Soliola on the night.

Bushfire support

The Yokohama DeNA BayStars have thrown their support behind Canberra and the Southern NSW region by donating over $33,000 (2.5 million yen) to the NSW Rural Fire Service. The donation includes contributions from the BayStars organisation, as well as from individual players Shota Imanaga, Tomoya Mikami, Yuki Kuniyoshi, Shinichi Ohnuki, Takamasa Kasai, Kosuke Sakaguchi and Shingo Hirata. This announcement from the BayStars is just another sign of the strength of the Cavalry’s partnership with the team, according to Director Dan Amodio.

New volleyball venture

Canberra Royals Rugby Union Club has joined forces in sporting partnership with the newest volleyball club in Canberra – Royals Volleyball Club. The partnership sees Royals Rugby assisting Royals Volleyball through their set-up, providing advice on matters of culture, community building and governance. Royals Volleyball train in Weston Creek on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and will offer a variety of sessions to suit all skill levels and ages.
