Awards to recognise business women in tough times

Despite the onerous challenges faced by many local businesses during the extended ACT lockdown, the annual Canberra Women in Business (CWB) awards will go ahead, determined to recognise the outstanding work of business women in our community.

For ACT businesses deemed non-essential, many have either been banned from opening or forced to operate at significantly reduced capacity to meet lockdown restrictions.

Local business women keen to nominate for the Rubik3 CWB Awards but finding the application fee a barrier to entry, some generous Canberrans have offered to sponsor the fee for those doing it tough.

And if you think you’ve left it too late to apply, the application deadline has been extended one week.

CWB president, Sheena Ireland said that owing to the increased lockdown and the pressures placed on businesses at this time, the deadline has been extended to 11.59pm next Friday 24 September 2021 (previously 17 September).

“We’ve had many discussions of late about this year’s Awards and the consistent and agreed thought is that now, more than ever, recognising the outstanding work of business women in our community is important.

“I encourage women who’ve been nominated to fill out that application; someone out there truly believes in you and your business; now it’s time to back yourself and submit your application,” Ms Ireland said.

Potential applicants have also been asked to reach out if they’d like to be connected with a previous winner or mentor for support preparing their own application.

“We also know there are many in our community experiencing financial hardship at the moment and this could be making them think twice about submitting their application, owing to the application fee ($55 for non-members),” she said.

“In true Canberra style, we’ve had some very generous people in our community offer to sponsor applications for those who are finding it tough right now.

“If the entry fee is a barrier, we encourage applicants to email us so that we can arrange to use a sponsored fee to support applications.”

The Rubik3 CWB Award categories are:

· Business Woman of the Year, sponsored by Chamberlains Law

· Small Business of the Year, sponsored by Solace Creations

· Indigenous Business Woman of the Year

· Young Business Woman of the Year

· Social Impact Business of the Year

· Innovation Business of the Year.
