Backyard putt-putt course in Ngunnawal

In a suburban street in Ngunnawal, at the back of the local golf course, youโ€™ll find Mr and Mrs Wartonโ€™s house and their particularly unusual backyard.

A keen golf enthusiast, Mr Warton decided to transform his yard into a six-hole putt-putt golf course for his wife, grandkids, and neighbours to enjoy.

โ€œInitially I had artificial grass in the backyard for the sake of not having to water it all the time and we used to play the Italian game bocce with all the kids on it. So, I just decided to make it bigger and put some holes in it,โ€ 76-year-old Mr Warton said.

โ€œI cut out the putting grass and now have four greens which makes six holes for us to play with. Our block naturally slopes at the back and goes around and then down the back of the house.โ€

Three of their grandchildren live around the corner from the couple, and they all like to come around and play mini golf with them, especially their granddaughter.

โ€œShe likes to ride around with her friend and play and she tries to beat me all the time โ€“ she only sometimes wins though,โ€ Mr Warton said.

โ€œThe neighbours think itโ€™s pretty cool too and they come around and play.โ€

During lockdown, the course has been a wonderful distraction for the grandparents, and he said they play 18 holes every day.

โ€œIt gives us something to do, and it gets us outside. Iโ€™m 76 and my wife is 74 so itโ€™s great exercise for us.โ€
