Bookworms across Canberra can revel in the news that Libraries ACT will reopen their branches in Belconnen, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong from this Wednesday, 20 October.
The three libraries will reopen across a limited offering of times throughout the week, including on weekends, for the public to visit, with a handful of restrictions in place.
Additional branches will open their doors from 1 November.
From Wednesday, the Belconnen, Gungahlin and Tuggeranong libraries will reopen on the following interim schedule:
- Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 10am – 5.30pm
- Saturdays: 10am – 4pm
- Sundays: 12pm – 4pm.
“We know Canberrans love their local libraries and have been waiting for branches to re-open,” said Libraries ACT acting executive branch manager, Dani Wickman.
Physical distancing measures will be maintained, and branches will be capped at no more than 25 people. Visits will be limited to 30 minutes, masks will be required to be worn and members will need to use the Check in CBR App on arrival. Library staff members can assist anyone without a smart phone to check in. Community rooms will remain closed at this time.
“Members wishing to use a computer can do so without making a booking, subject to computer availability. However, there will be restrictions in place for all users of the library when visiting,” Ms Wickman said.
Due dates on borrowed items have been extended too and return chutes will initially only be open at the three library branches that are re-opening.
“We are anticipating library members are excited to return to a branch, but there is no rush for members to return items as the due date has been extended to 30 November 2021,” Ms Wickman said.
The popular Mystery Box and the Home Library Service will continue to operate.
The ACT Heritage Library will also remain closed at this time.
For historians and researchers who wish to submit an enquiry, please continue to do so through the Libraries ACT website and skilled library staff will assist and respond electronically.
