A new half-pipe (or vert ramp) is now open at the Belconnen skatepark.
โThe original Belconnen skatepark was built over 30 years ago, and is considered Canberraโs best skatepark,โ Tara Cheyne, ACT Minister for City Services, said. โIt has attracted visitors from all over the world.
โThe new seven-metre-tall half-pipe will only add to its appeal and attract new users. It will provide an exciting new space for Canberrans to be active and learn new skills โ whether that be skateboarding, scooting, or freestyle BMX.โ
The half-pipe was built in sections which were transported to the site, craned into place, and put together like a giant Meccano set.
As part of the project, two murals were painted on the half-pipe.
The first is by James Houlcroft, who painted pigeon-headed figures to represent the spectrum of skaters who make up the Canberra skateboarding community. Skaters and pigeons are found in public areas full of concrete and corners.
The second is by Eddie Mo in collaboration with Paul Licayan (known as โPAWโ in the street art world). Their mural replicates the underside of a skateboard, and represents the graffiti and street culture of the Belconnen skatepark.
โOne of the best parts of this exciting new facility is that it will be able to hold both amateur and professional skating competitions,โ Ms Cheyne said.
โThe skatepark scene is very popular in Canberra, and I hope this encourages more of the community to get out and give something new a try. Itโs also a great way to stay warm in winter.โ
โToday is a big day for Canberraโs skateboarding and BMX community,โ Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, said. โIt has been great to work with them to design and deliver the half-pipe.
โItโs great to see their advocacy come to life. As our city and the popularity of skateboarding and BMX grows, itโs important for us to support these sports.
โI hope that Canberrans of all ages are able to enjoy this new half-pipe for many years to come.โ
