Bentspoke’s Crankshaft IPA has taken out the number one spot in the 2020 Great Australasian Beer Spec-tap-ular (GABS) Hottest 100, an annual beer poll where craft beer lovers vote for their favourite brews of the year.
Bentspoke’s head brewer and co-owner Richard Watkins said the American IPA has a very special place in the team’s hearts – it was one of the first beers on tap when the brewery first opened in Canberra in 2014.
“We are thrilled with the support for Crankshaft from Canberra and around Australia.
“So many of our friends and colleagues at breweries around the country have done so well in this year’s poll, we are especially proud that Canberra brewers have 12 spots in the top 100,” Richard says.
“It’s a testament to the local culture here – customers really believe in drinking good quality local beer and supporting small independent breweries.”
Canberra was well represented in the poll, with a total of five entries in the top 100 from Bentspoke at numbers one, 10, 15, 19 and 23.
Another local favourite, Capital Brewing Co., scored themselves seven entries at numbers 13, 14, 46, 48, 72, 73 and 93.
Bentspoke’s Crankshaft also took out the number one spot on the Indie Craft Beers top 100 list, while Capital scored a number one spot on the list of New Craft Beers for their Capital XPA.
Lovers of local beers can also get excited about the return of the Canberra Craft Beer and Cider Festival, to be held this year on Saturday 20 March in Braddon.
Around 40 local and interstate exhibitors will be in attendance, with more than 250 beers and ciders available for tasting.
The event had to be cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, and this year’s festival will be split up into ticketed sessions with cashless transactions.
The festival will help raise funds for local charity Rise Above Capital Region Cancer Relief.
