Big name artists to descend on Canberra

Big name domestic and international artists are set to descend on Canberra later this year, with packed line-ups released for both Spilt Milk and Stonefest.

Spilt Milk, to be held this year on Saturday 30 November at Commonwealth Park, boasts international acts such as Khalid and Scottish outfit CHVRCHES, as well as Aussie festival favourites like Triple J’s Hottest 100 winners Ocean Alley, Middle Kids, Dune Rats, G Flip, Illy and more. Canberra locals Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have also booked a spot on the bill.

The festival showcases music, food and art, and has catapulted to success since the first Spilt Milk was held in Commonwealth Park in 2016. This year, organisers Kicks Entertainment have announced an expansion of the festival to the Victorian city of Ballarat, to be held on Saturday 30 November.

In more good news for Canberra’s music lovers, Stonefest has announced its return to the University of Canberra after a 10-year hiatus. To be held on Saturday 19 October, the festival will bring British India and UK act Example to headline the event at UC, as well as Thelma Plum, Mallrat, Skegss and more, in a celebration of the laying of the University’s Foundation Stone in October 1968.

UC Live Music Manager Kelsey Bagust says the University is trying to provide better representation to female and non-binary artists, with more than 60% of the acts featuring non-male members.

“We’ve got this great mix of emerging and local artists as well as some artists who’ve had a lot of success but haven’t necessarily been through Canberra before,” she says.

“There’s a really great range of genres and artists on the line-up; a little bit of something for everyone. It’s really exciting that over 60% of the bands have non-male representation as well.”

Local performers will be well-represented at Stonefest too, with rapper Genesis Owusu and alt-rockers Moaning Lisa heading up a Canberra contingent that includes Sputnik Sweetheart, and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers.

Tickets for Spilt Milk went on sale today, Thursday 13 June via spilt-milk.com.au, while Stonefest tickets became available yesterday via stonefest.com.au
