Blue Sky House renovation revitalises 1960s cottage

A charming cottage nestled within a leafy, tree-filled garden in a quiet cul-de-sac is where you’ll discover the Blue Sky House. Originally built in the 1960s, the renovation transforming it into a light-filled contemporary family home, while retaining its authentic appeal, is nothing short of wondrous.

There was a driving desire to retain all existing spaces while repurposing certain areas in the cottage. This strategy allowed a more spacious environment and a stronger landscape connection to organically unfold.

Designed by Rob Henry Architects in Canberra, Blue Sky House has been entered into the ACT Architecture Awards for its innovative renovation and revitalisation of an original 1960s home.

Establishing a northerly facing light was imperative for the family. Success was achieved through designing as a reverse truss – the roofline’s new wing provided generous amounts of northerly light to spill into the deeper spaces of the home through clerestory windows.

Cottage character with a contemporary twist is the epitome of Blue Sky House, and linking elements effortlessly flow one room into the next. All the bedrooms were fully renovated, while the bathroom and laundry were left untouched. The kitchen is the true heart of the home, and the new northerly deck gives ample opportunity to revel in the picturesque garden that is immaculately landscaped.

“Rob nailed the brief. He has delivered, in a small space, something that is beautiful and incredibly functional for our family,” the owner said.

“We love the light living room, we love the connection to the garden, and the kitchen is perfect.

“It’s not a big house, but all the spaces work. From the street, it is still the same cottage that drew us here, but inside, Rob has transformed it into something unexpected and special.”

To accentuate the cottage’s original character, both the exterior and interior material palettes were specifically and meticulously chosen to draw out the unique features of the home.

A whole lot of love went into designing Blue Sky House, and with thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and retention of original character, it has become a project to marvel at and, more importantly, a well-loved family home.
