Body found near Bermagui in search for missing boater

The body of a man has been located on the NSW South Coast near Bermagui after a boat washed ashore days earlier.

About 3.15pm on Tuesday 12 December, emergency services were called to Haywards Beach, near Tilba Road, Bermagui, following reports a boat had washed ashore.

Officers from the South Coast Police District responded and commenced a search of the water and surrounding area, with assistance from Marine Area Command, Surf Life Savers, State Emergency Services and the Westpac Helicopter.

Despite an extensive search of the water and surrounding land, the 60-year-old man from Victoria was not located, and the search was suspended on Thursday 14 December 2023.

About 5.30pm, Monday 18 December, the man’s body was located in the water at Haywards Beach, Bermagui.

He is yet to be formally identified; however, is believed to be that of the missing man. A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
