Book talk: 3 books from Australian authors

Michael Popple reviews three outstanding books from some very talented Australian authors. You can find more of Michaelโ€™s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com

Fire With Fire by Candice Fox

Bantam Australia, $32.99

When two determined parents take over a Los Angeles forensics centre, their ultimatum is simple, find their missing daughter within 24 hours or watch key evidence be destroyed. As the police besiege the centre, it falls to two unlikely partners, a hardened cop who just escaped a harrowing undercover operation and a rookie fired on her first day, to find the girl.

One of Australiaโ€™s best crime fiction authors returns with another gritty and compelling standalone thriller. Fast paced and intense, but with some real heart to it, Fire With Fire is a gripping read that proves very hard to put down.

The Isles of the Gods by Amie Kaufman

Allen & Unwin, $24.99

Selly is a sailor who is desperate to reunite with her father and make her mark on the world. But when she runs into the spoiled Prince Leander, she and her ship are dragged into an adventure they never expected. Their new passenger needs to reach the sacred Isles of the Gods before another war between gods begins and all hell is unleashed.

This was a deeply enjoyable young adult fantasy novel from the always impressive Amie Kaufman. Featuring entertaining teenage characters, an elaborate new fantasy realm, and a ton of action, this is a brilliant novel for readers of all ages.

Echo Lake by Joan Sauers

Allen & Unwin, $32.99

After finalising her divorce, historian Rose McHugh moves to the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Buying a scenic cottage outside Berrima, Rose soon finds that the area has a dark secret. A woman went missing years ago and a roll of film Rose finds in her backyard entices her to learn more. But will her actions force a dangerous killer to strike again?

Screenwriter Joan Sauers makes her crime fiction debut in a big way with Echo Lake, which combines distinctive characters with a detailed look at the beautiful Highlands area. A fantastic murder mystery that will appeal to Canberra readers.
