Book talk: Fantasy and science fiction

This week, Michael Popple recommends three impressive fantasy and science fiction books. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com

Outcast by Louise Carey

Gollancz, $32.99

In a post-apocalyptic, technology-dominated future, security officer Tanta is drafted into a deadly war between two rival corporations after a devastating series of terrorist attacks. Tasked with finding out who is truly responsible for the carnage, Tanta discovers a dangerous conspiracy while also uncovering dark secrets about her past and the company who raised her.

Outcast is a brilliant sequel to Carey’s debut solo novel, Inscape, and combines an intense thriller story with a clever cyber-punk inspired future. Well written and very exciting, this is an extremely fun novel that quickly draws you in and refuses to let go.

Only a Monster by Vanessa Len

Allen & Unwin, $22.99

During her holidays, Joan Chan-Hunt discovers that her family are beings known as monsters, with the ability to travel through time. However, her powers are far from benign, and Joan soon finds herself being hunted by a deadly human hero. Can Joan unleash the monster within to survive, or will she lose herself to the dark temptations of her abilities?

Australian author Vanessa Len has just produced one of the most powerful debuts of the year. This awesome young adult fantasy book is incredibly addictive, and you will fall in love with its epic story and its morally grey characters. An exceptional read!

Star Wars: The High Republic: The Fallen Star by Claudia Gray

Del Rey, $32.99

Hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga, the Republic and the Jedi were in a golden age. However, that all came crashing down when the raiders known as the Nihil attacked the space station, Starlight Beacon. Faced with massive destruction and mysterious creatures who feed on Force users, the Jedi onboard must use all their skill and resources to save the station.

The new Star Wars: High Republic series continues to impress with this epic novel by Claudia Gray, who has produced a captivating disaster narrative that pushes the Jedi characters into some dark places. A memorable and fantastic Star Wars tie-in novel.
