A fast-finishing CBR Brave have continued their winning ways with a thrilling 4-2 victory over the Newcastle Northstars at the Brave Cave on Sunday evening, 20 June.
The Brave opened the scoring in the first period through Casey Kubara, his first goal in just his second Brave appearance this season.
The Northstars hit back with two quick goals to open the second period to take the lead.
The Brave then sprung into action with Casey Kubara scoring his second goal mid-way through the period to level the scores.
Despite the Brave starting to take the ascendency, both sides went into the final break locked at 2-all.
The final period opened up for both sides, but it was the Brave that made the most of their chances. Two goals in the closing stages from Tyler Kubara and Brave Captain Matt Harvey securing another win for Canberra.
Key saves from Aleksi Toivonen snuffed out any hopes of a late Newcastle fightback, keeping the Northstars at bay late in the game.
Both sides also played the night before, Saturday 19 June, with the Brave prevailing 2-1 in sudden-death overtime.
Scores were locked at nil-all until the second period when Brave Defenceman Bayley Kubara delivered a longe-range strike give the home side the lead.
The Northstars found an equaliser midway through the final period and the scores stayed locked until the end of regulation.
Canberra product Kai Miettinen scored the match winner two minutes into a tense overtime period with a well executed mid-range strike.
The high-flying Brave now sit comfortably atop the McCormack Cup ladder with 6 wins in 7 games for the season, with an away trip against the Sydney Ice Dogs next Saturday their next match up.
