Whenever there’s a change of season, Canberra Interior stylist, blogger and DIYer Gina Ciancio looks for ways to change up her interiors to breathe new life into the home and welcome the season ahead. Gina shares some of her favourite ways to brighten up the home for summer.
New cushions for your sofa
Always top of the list is picking up a few new cushions! I suggest keeping most of your cushions on your sofa in a neutral colour, such as oatmeal or a shade of grey, and in a transitional fabric that will serve you well year-round.
But at least two cushions should reflect the current season. So, pack away any in deep wintery tones in favour of some zesty shades. There’s a fab new custom cushion service now available at Clark Rubber where you can get any type of cushion custom made to your exact size, fabric and fill. Why not get a bit creative and ditch mass-produced cushions for a couple you’ve designed yourself and had made just for your home?!
Set a new colour palette
While autumn and winter is a time to embrace deep colours like terracotta, plum and emerald green, summer is the season for brighter and bolder tones.
It can feel daunting to decorate with colour, so I suggest following the foolproof ratio of 60:30:10 where 60% of the room is in one colour, 30% in a feature colour and 10% an accent colour. You only need a few pops of colour around a room to set the tone.
Embrace a new scent
Decorating your home isn’t just about what you can see – scent plays a bit part in setting the mood of a space. Channel summer vibes with a citrusy or floral candle, or diffuser if that’s more your thing.
Restyle your bed
Given we spend a third of our lives in bed, it makes sense that this is one zone of the home that gets attention. Sleep with comfort on hot summer nights by looking for natural, breathable bedding – bamboo and linen are always popular. And tie the look together a lightweight throw blanket at the foot of the bed and some new feature cushions. I love the long lumbar cushion I had made using Clark Rubber’s custom cushion service where I selected a fabric made from 70% recycled wool.
Update your vignettes
Vignettes are styled arrangements around your home and create moments of interest. If you don’t already style your home with vignettes, get on the bandwagon, and thank me later!
All you need to do is find a base of some kind, such as a tray or stack of books, and layer décor on top. In summer, a beautiful indoor plant, summer-scent candle, and other summery décor are ideal.
