A first half scoring blitz set the tone for the Brumbies as they produced an electric performance to defeat the Chiefs 54-17 at GIO Stadium Canberra on Saturday 23 February.
The Brumbies led 33-10 at the break and continued the momentum in the second half for the comprehensive win. Their next match is away against the Hurricanes on Friday 1 March.
In other results, the Brumbies Runners defeated the Auckland Contenders 49-14 on Friday 22 February; Brumbies Women had a tough outing against the Waratahs on Saturday 23 February going down 26-0. The Brumbies Women take on Melbourne on Sunday 3 March 3pm at Seiffert Oval, Queanbeyan.
Meantime, the Brumbies have announced contract extensions for assistant coaches Laurie Fisher and Peter Hewat.
Both assistants have been extended to the end of 2021 Super Rugby season with Hewat offered a two-year extension to his current deal and Fisher 12 months to his contract.
Grant boost for local sports
Seventy local sporting organisations will be given a boost to help them provide more training and education opportunities and improve their club facilities under the ACT Government’s Sports and Recreation Grants Program.
The Women Sport and Recreation Participation and Leadership Program is included in this grants round. Under this program in 2019, nine successful applicants will receive funding including Canberra Ultimate, receiving $10,000 to deliver an ultimate frisbee program for girls aged 12 to 17 years, and Canberra Underwater Rugby, awarded $3,100 to purchase female-friendly equipment and assist with developing a women-only beginner program.
Other organisations receiving funding through the Sports and Recreation Grants Programs this year include: Squash ACT to install a security system and CCTV to allow Woden courts to have 24-hour access to pre-approved paying participants ($18,000); YMCA Sailing Club to upgrade safety boats to support a range of sailing activities ($13,650); Flinders Tennis Club to upgrade accessibility arrangements and safety features including installing ramps for participants with disability ($5,830); and Canberra Rowing Club to purchase female-friendly equipment including new boats and oars ($13,125).

Vouchers encourage active kids
Families across NSW will be able to access two $100 Active Kids vouchers per year, with the aim of encouraging participation in sport and to continue to ease the cost of living for families.
Member for Monaro John Barilaro said from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2019, a second $100 Active Kids voucher will be available. From 2020, two $100 Active Kids vouchers will be available from Service NSW for the entire calendar year.
The two vouchers cannot be combined to pay for a single program costing more than $100. They can be used with the one provider to help pay the cost of two separate terms of sport such as the summer and winter season of netball.
To apply for the Active Kids voucher, parents can register online with Service NSW and find a registered sport or physical activity, club or organisation to use their voucher with.

Baseball Australia says no to alcohol
Baseball Australia has partnered with the national campaign ‘End Alcohol Advertising in Sport’and pledged to no longer accept alcohol advertising in its junior competitions and at the national representative level of the game. Baseball Australia’s decision does not extend to, or impact, the operations of the eight independently owned and operated Australian Baseball League teams competing in the professional domestic competition.
Ten pin bowling
Local athletes Amy Shoesmith and Kyle Annetts will represent Australia in their respective Tenpin Bowling Championships this year. Amy will compete in the inaugural World Tenpin Bowling Championships in France on 16-23 March while Kyle will represent Australia in the 2019 Asian Youth Championships in Malaysia on 17-26 April.
