Bulky waste collection starts in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong

Bulky waste collection started today in Tuggeranong and Gungahlin, saving many Canberrans a trip to the tip with over 1,100 collections scheduled since bookings opened on 1 July.

Seventy-six residents in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong are expected to receive their free collection in the first week of the service.

Forde, Moncrieff, Conder, Bonython, Bonner, Casey, Nicholls, Calwell, Gungahlin and Amaroo are the 10 suburbs with the most bookings so far.

Overall, bookings have been split fairly evenly between Gungahlin and Tuggeranong.

The household items that have been listed for collection the most include furniture, timber, scrap metal, appliances and electrical equipment.

The service is currently available to all residents in Tuggeranong and Gungahlin as well as concession card holders in all ACT suburbs.

It will be rolled out across the ACT in a staged approach similar to how the green bin service was provided.

According to the ACT Government, the online booking form takes less than five minutes to complete, with a calendar provided to help residents find a suitable day to schedule their collection a minimum of two weeks in advance.

Each household will receive one free collection per year of up to two cubic metres which allows them to get rid of a trailer load of goods.

The contractor providing the service, Suez, is partnering with The Salvation Army and Vinnies to identify items that can be sold through their shopfronts, keeping valuable items out of landfill.

It is also intended for the Suez processing facility Place in Hume to be open to the public with ‘Last Chance Saturdays’ set to be introduced in the coming months, which will offer Canberrans an opportunity to rescue items free of charge.

If you are a resident of Gungahlin or Tuggeranong, a bulky waste collection can be booked online at act.gov.au/bulkywaste
