Busy weekend for police on ACT roads

Canberrans are being reminded that police maintain a constant focus on driver behaviour following a busy weekend for Road Policing members.

Between Friday 28 October and Sunday 30 October, police detected:

  • 28 drivers exceeding the speed limit, including a 17-year-old boy who was arrested in Aranda on Friday night.
  • 27 unregistered motor vehicles, 18 of which were not covered by compulsory third party insurance.
  • Three drivers who failed to stop at a stop sign, including a driver who collided with another vehicle in Reid on Saturday afternoon.
  • Three drivers who were driving whilst unlicensed.
  • A further 39 other offences were also identified, including not displaying P plates, and using a mobile phone while driving.

Police also conducted close to 900 roadside breath tests and close to 70 roadside drug tests across the weekend.

Five drivers were found to be exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol – immediate suspension notices were issued to three drivers – while a further two people were found to be driving with a prescribed drug in their oral fluid. They have been summonsed to face court at a later date.

Additionally, between 2.00pm and 3.30pm on Sunday 30 October, police conducted an operation targeting registration and driver licensing offences, utilising automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) on Horse Park Drive, Kenny.

During this operation, 10 infringement notices were issued, which included five unregistered and uninsured vehicles, one unregistered vehicle, one unlicenced driver, one driver caught speeding less than 15 km/h over the posted limit, and one driver detected driving past an emergency services vehicle exceeding 40km/h.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Acting Inspector Ken Williams said the weekend’s activities were a timely reminder to the Canberra community.

“While targeted activities such as Operation TORIC are undertaken with a specific focus, police are always targeting driver behaviour,” Acting Inspector Williams said.

“If you speed, if you flout the road rules, if you drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police are out there, and we will catch you.

“Following 18 deaths on our roads so far this year, I would again implore Canberra drivers to be mindful of their behaviour on our roads. Slow down, drive to the conditions, and be respectful of other road users.

“This weekend’s activities are also a reminder about ensuring your vehicle is registered and has adequate insurance, as police can and will target unregistered and uninsured vehicles.”
