Calls for help after heavy rainfall across Canberra

The ACTSES have received a number of calls for help after a heavy downpour across Canberra this afternoon saw cars stuck in the street, while the Canberra Centre was also evacuated.

Between 4pm and 7pm, the ACTSES received 50 requests for assistance, largely in relation to flooding of residential and commercial structures.

Canberra was pelted with 21.8 millimetres of rain in just one hour between 4.22pm and 5.15pm, causing a number of vehicles to become stuck near the city.

The Canberra Centre was also evacuated due to flooding, with water forming on the floor in certain parts of the shopping centre and water seen leaking from light fixtures.

The ACTSES and ACTRFS volunteers, alongside ACT Fire & Rescue crews, have been responding to storm and flood related jobs and are expected to work into the evening.

They are encouraging Canberrans to take extra care while travelling on ACT roads with some reports of flooding and downed trees across roads.

Never walk, ride, or drive through flood waters – If it’s flooded forget it.

For assistance during storms and floods, call the ACTSES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency call Triple Zero (000).
