Not that you needed one, but if you were after an excuse to order takeaway for dinner tonight – here it is!
The Restaurant & Catering Association (R&CA) is urging Australians to continue to #EatAloneTogether, and the campaign has now officially evolved into #TakeawayTuesday, which means it is essentially your civic duty to order a pizza (or a burger or a laksa) for dinner tonight.
The #EatAloneTogether campaign launched in March to encourage people to support restaurants during the height of COVID-19 restrictions, and Unilever Food Solutions (UFS) declared Tuesday 19 May as National Takeaway Day.
Both the R&CA and UFS are encouraging Australians to continue this support of local restaurants – especially as restrictions tighten in some areas around the country – by placing a takeaway or delivery order at a local venue every Tuesday, if they are able to.
“If our favourite restaurants are to survive this crisis, it is critical that we continue to help our restaurants survive and rebuild their business,” says R&CA CEO Wes Lambert.
“COVID-19 continues to impact the restaurant industry in a big way particularly with the second wave of restrictions coming into effect in NSW and Victoria, as well as international borders remaining closed and restaurants facing an absence of both international and domestic tourism,” he said.
“We need all Australians to get behind #TakeawayTuesday – whether that is helping to promote it or by ordering takeaway so our restaurants and chefs can keep their businesses in business.”
While restrictions in the ACT remain the same, for now, Canberrans are still being urged to maintain social distancing and to avoid large crowds, especially in light of an outbreak of cases in Batemans Bay, a favourite holiday destination for residents of the ACT region.
Takeaway Tuesday officially kicks off today, 21 July, and will continue every Tuesday to support the hospitality industry businesses doing it tough.
